A double bill with two exciting bands from the London jazz scene featuring psychedelic and experimental sounds from Valia Calda and Maddalena Ghezzi’s trio at Paper Dress Vintage.
1st set: 8.45pm Maddalena Ghezzi, Ruth Goller, Maria Chiara Argirò
2nd set: 9.45pm Valia Calda
Reflecting on the contemporary yet timeless struggles of physical and ideological displacement, Valia Calda’s music draws inspiration from the themes of migration and exile. The group emerged into the London jazz scene in 2013, led by guitarist Nikos Ziarkas and Thodoris Ziarkas. Their music is rooted in the folk music of Epirus, Greece and psychedelic jazz, which also tangles with punk inspired guitar riffs and modal improvisations.
Emerald with Maria Chiara Argirò (Innovative Leisure) and Dolomite with Ruth Goller (International Anthem) are the most recent releases part of Maddalena Ghezzi’s series Minerals. At Paper Dress Vintage Emerald “delicate world in osmosis with nature and humans” is meeting Dolomite “quixotic moments” in a trio concert that will see Ghezzi, Goller and Argirò merging the two works.
I am honoured to be part of this amazing event by live-electronic music wizard Pouya Ehsaei and voice-shifting writer-performer Tara Fatehi.
Join us for our end of year gathering and the launch of From the Lips to the Moon first publication: 'In times of darkness' a journey through poetry, music and illustrations. Expect riveting live music, twisted beats, absurd texts, fierce poetry and hypnotic visuals. Another unique line-up of poets and musicians + hang out time.
FUWAH is a four people band including bass player Luca Pissavini, saxophonist Filippo Cozzi, drummer Fabrizio Carriero and vocalist Maddalena Ghezzi.
At Corte Dei Miracoli they will launch their album CARE, a multifaceted album that aims to explore the different aspects of caring. Hypnotic drum and bass grooves infused with intimate harmonised sax and voice lines are at the core of CARE.

Sono contentissima di presentare Dolomite a Stanglerhof nelle Dolomiti. Maggiori informazioni e info su come prenotare al link sottostante.
I am delighted to present Dolomite in the Dolomites in a beautiful venue Stanglerhof. You can find more information and how to book at the link below.
Ackerley, Wallace and Ghezzi will present a 1-hour concert featuring compositions by each artist in a song cycle woven with spontaneous interludes as an inquiry into causes and broader social issues such as climate change impact. Ackerley and Ghezzi connected across distances through a mutual friend they found instant commonalities having both worked under the mentorship of NYC vocalist, Sara Serpa. Ackerley and Wallace both have a long standing collaboration in their trio, MAW.
Dolomite is the fifth release of my series Minerals. This work is a collaboration with bassist, vocalist, composer and environmentalist RUTH GOLLER (International Anthem). Both linked to the Dolomites mountain range, we reckon with themes around climate change, nature and healing spaces. This is a water journey through a changing landscape. Dolomite is supported by women hiking brand LaMunt and innovative sustainability project Vaia.

I am excited to join TooSeriouslyCommittedPeople (TSCP) at Hundred Years Gallery.
TSCP is a duo from composers and improvisers Stefano Grasso and Alessio Dal Checco. Both rooted in jazz and active in many different musical situations (from ska to hip hop to afrobeat to radical improvisation), they gather in a shared approach to total music, expressing their love, suffering, gratitude to life. Clashing explosive sounds melting in wavy drones, organic rhythms, whispers from mountains to above. Their first album, Truth Seeker, is out for the experimental italian label Mupe Records (MUPE 004, Oct 22nd 2023).
Inspired by the concept of listening with curiosity and by The Book Of Delights by Ross Gay, I have embarked on a daily listening activity ending on the day of the gig where I'll present my delights alongside TSCP.

Emerald is a sci-fi feminist EP by Maddalena Ghezzi and is part of her series Minerals. This work features Maria Chiara Argirò (Innovative Leisure) on synth and electronics. The EP described as, "this gorgeousness" by Tom Ravenscroft BBC6, explores an empowering world, "a delicate world in osmosis with nature and humans" (Ma Track Bien Aimée, Prun) that sees women at the centre.
At Vortex Ghezzi and Argirò will present Emerald with live sound manipulation by Anything Pointless.
Anything Pointless is an expansive and uncompromising experimental producer from Turin and now based in London. He delivers bright and glassy sound-art landscapes and makes use of granular technology to expand, stretch and move digital air in unexpected ways. Like many intriguing artists, just when you feel you might have understood the process it takes you on new and exciting turns.
Moment's Notice showcases five leading lights in the art of spontaneous composition. Each episode consists of one duo and one trio playing fully-improvised, 40-minute sets. The evening culminates with a combo quintet set. Line-ups are curated by the event creator, George Nelson.
I am thrilled to be part of this incredible line up:
DUO: Matana Roberts and Liam Noble
TRIO: Maddalena Ghezzi, Neville Malcolm, Will Cleasby
Pietro Cavassa and I will be opening for Sculpture band with a set modular synth and voice.
Recreational Grounds is a reaction to the issues of limits and accessibility of the more typical exhibition spaces in London, with an aim to encourage experimentation and create a dialogue around the alternative presentation of artwork. The project encourages ephemeral approaches to react to the restrictions of creating outdoor site-responsive work for the 48 hour exhibition.
I will be part of a music and dance event alongside amazing musicians: Francis Moore (shakuhachi, flute, bagpipes), Kirke Gross (cello), Emily Shapiro (bass clarinet) and dancers: Laura Doehler, Elisa Vassena, Pepa Ubera.
The event takes place in Wendover House ground floor car park, SE17 2UD.
Recreational Grounds VII will be guest curated by Catherine Long, Jesus Crespo and Dido Hallett, who are all currently undertaking the Turps Studio Painting Programme on the Aylesbury Estate. This will be the seventh event to be held at the carpark and will be the first one held there since the pandemic.
Musicking is the verb for engaging in music, and musicking is a lovely evening curated by musician, curator and radio host Francis Moore.
On the night I will present two solo work-in-progress works: Transitions and Trees/Humans and then I’ll join forces with singer, composer and improviser Miryam Solomon for some duos…I am truly looking forward to it. Come along!
£10 / pay what you can (tickets on the door)
Inspired by the work of organisations like Mutual Mentorship for Musicians and the words of Shanta Nurullah at the latest This Is A Movement talk.
I curated a women composers’ recital at The City Academy Hackney in which I teach singing and lead senior choir. This is the first women composer celebration ever hosted in the school and it will include pieces by contemporary jazz artists (many included in the 2022 New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers by Berklee Press), classical composers from the 18th century and hip hop artists from the 2000s. Among them: Shunaji, Tomeka Reid, Little Simz and more…
I will perform a piece by contemporary vocalist-composer Sara Serpa together with the musicians: Liz Jones, Sophie Ali, Hannah Monkhouse, Meghan Marshall and Harriet Crawford.
The event will be held at the school at 16:30.

Francesca Naibo, Beatrice Arrigoni e Maddalena Ghezzi si incontrano nel 2022 per sperimentare insieme nell'ambito dell'improvvisazione estemporanea.
